As a part of the final challenge, we are working on expanding aquaponics in all shapes and sizes. From expanding aquaponics to commercial spaces, to an at home fish tank, the AquaPals are working on bringing aquaponics to everyone that wants it!
Now, we are working on bringing aquaponics to classrooms all around the Hudson Valley. At West Road Elementary School, Mrs. Sizemore has always wanted to bring aquaponics to her class. Now, with our help, she is fulfilling that dream! She will be growing marigolds with her class to give to their parents for Mothers' Day. Biweekly, we visit her class to teach them about the importance of aquaponics and how it all works! One of her students loved our presentation so much that she gave us her notes and drew pictures of us! We love it! SO much youth energy behind science that we hope to inspire through this hands-on access to real science. AquaPals Emme, Jake, and Spencer have visited regularly and loved being with the class.
Today, we visited Vail Farm Elementary School's 5th grade class with Mr. Adams. In his class, AquaPals Emme and Jake gave a presentation and demonstrated chemical testing to the students. They loved it and can't wait for us to come back! One student told us that she can't wait to be like us one day! Mr. Adams has brown trout through Trout in the Classroom that we will be working with to grow lettuce for the class.
For both of these classes, we will be donating a miniature raft system to grow the crops of their choice. These rafts will be made out of polystyrene sheets and the growing medium will be coconut coir. Coconut coir, as researched by AquaPal Jake, is a much safer option for the classroom!
