Today was super exciting for the AquaPals because we took aquaponics to the next level. We implemented our 3D printed raft system into a turtle rehabilitation center that houses 80 endangered Blandings turtles and 100 total turtles. The nitrate levels in their water were nearing 160ppm! As a result, they had to do constant water changes and it seemed wasteful to pouring all of this nutrient rich water down the drain. The AquaPals came up with an innovative solution: grow lettuce in their water! In the sump tank of this turtle rehabilitation center, we placed four lettuce plants growing out of coconut coir in our 3D printed modular raft system. The lives of these endangered turtles are precious and we wanted to make the best home possible for them! We are so excited to make aquaponics a solution for real world issues, whether that be hunger, water pollution, or saving the turtles! We will monitor the water chemistry to track the removal of nitrates from the water. These 3D printed rafts are perfect for this turtle-ponics setup and we can't wait to keep feeding these little (and not-so-little) guys!
